THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE CLEVELAND AND NEW YORK AVANT-GARDE/UNDERGROUND MUSIC SCENES WAS ESTABLISHED EARLY ON, AND CONTINUES TO BE A TWO-WAY STREET OF INFLUENCE AND APPRECIATION. CLEVELAND'S LA CAVE CLUB 1N THE 1960'S WAS ONE OF THE FEW PLACES OUTSIDE OF NEW YORK CITY TO GIVE THE VELVET UNDERGROUND A WELCOME AND REPEATED RECEPTION ON THEIR TOURS OF THE CULTURAL WASTELAND OF 1960'S MID-AMERICA. NEW YORK CITY PROVIDED APPRECIATION OF ONE KIND OR ANOTHER TO CLEVELAND'S PERE UBU, STYRENES, DEAD BOYS, RED DARK SWEET, ETC. THE EXAMPLES ARE NOT REALLY TOO NUMEROUS TO MENTION, BUT TOO WELL-KNOWN TO BOTHER.
TODAY, A NEW MOVEMENT OF A YOUNGER GENERATION OF MUSICAL MISFITS AND MISCREANTS HAS TAKEN OVER, FORGING NEW ALLIANCES, BREAKING NEW BARRIERS, CAUSING NEW TROUBLE. ONE OF THE GUIDING BEACONS OF THIS NEW MOVEMENT HAS BEEN THE CLASSIC 1978 COMPILATION ALBUM PRODUCED BY BRIAN ENO, *NO NEW YORK*. THE GROUND-BREAKING PERFORMANCES OF THE FOUR BANDS ON THAT ALBUM HAVE INFORMED AND INSPIRED THE CURRENT GENERATION TO FIND NEW AREAS OF SOUND EXPLORATION TO MINE AND DEVELOP. IN TRIBUTE TO THE OLD GARDE, FOUR CLEVELAND BANDS IN THE FOREFRONT OF THE NEW WERE CALLED UPON TO ONCE MORE BRING TO LIFE THE ECHOES OF PAST EXPRESSIONS OF DISCONTENT WITH THE STATUS QUO THAT STILL REVERBERATE AS FRESHLY AS EVER TO THIS DAY.
